The impact of using the Student Survey on Teaching - from Deputy Principal Hayatti Miller, Hammond Park Secondary College, WA

From Deputy Principal Hayatti Miller, Hammond Park Secondary College, WA

At HPSC, we strongly value a culture of feedback and actively encourage student voice.

The Pivot program has become an essential tool in capturing student perspectives on teaching and learning across our college. One of the key benefits we appreciate is the ability to customize survey questions to align with our Instructional Framework, allowing us to gather feedback that is directly relevant to our teaching goals.

Before students complete the Pivot survey, we prioritize educating them about its purpose. Through cohort assemblies, we explain what the survey involves, why their feedback is important, and provide examples of the types of questions they will encounter.

We also engage with our parent community by informing them of the survey and encouraging discussions with their children about the value of student voice and the impact of their feedback.

Our commitment to effective implementation includes upskilling new staff on the Pivot platform, ensuring they understand the survey process and how to administer it smoothly.

Heads of Instructions play a critical role by sharing feedback data with their teams and integrating insights into their Learning Area Operational Plans.

The support provided by the Pivot team has been outstanding throughout this process. The pre-survey guidance, ongoing assistance, and post-survey coaching calls have been particularly valuable. These coaching calls help us dive deeper into the data and identify areas for further inquiry and improvement.

Overall, our experience with Pivot has been very positive, and it continues to be a key component in driving our focus on student voice and continuous improvement at HPSC.
